LISNAGARVEY SIXTHS 1 – 2 ANTRIM SECONDS
Antrim Seconds travelled to Hillsborough to play Lisnagarvey Sixths in their penultimate league cup match of the season last Friday evening. Antrim started well and created a few chances before the home team sprang into life and goalkeeper Cameron O’Neill was in action kicking and blocking the ball from any shots that came his way. He was ably backed up by defenders Nathan Murdock, Robbie Watt. David Mailey and Jamie Kernaghan and the first quarter ended scoreless. The second quarter started with a lot of home team pressure but with the Antrim defence playing solidly their midfielders, Chris Wilson, Adam Pearce and Lyle Kane seemed to be finding more space and time to get their passes through to forwards Andrew Clarke, Josh Irwin, Chris Roe and Steven Gammon Although they won a few penalty corners the Antrim routines weren’t sharp enough and the second quarter also ended scoreless. As the third quarter progressed Antrim were playing the better hockey but in the 41st minute a bad hit out was intercepted and the ball was quickly moved into the circle where a Lisnagarvey forward slid the ball under the advancing Cameron O’Neill to give the home team the lead. This setback seemed to shock the Antrim team into overdrive and within five minutes they were level when a cross from the right wing was deflected into the Lisnagarvey net by the alert Roe. The battle for supremacy was on with play switching from end to end and just before time ran out on the third quarter the home team won a penalty corner but their striker Andy Nye missed a great chance when he fired the ball wide from close in. The last quarter started with renewed Antrim pressure and with rising confidence strong linked play between Kernaghan, Gammon and Pearce saw the ball switched to Roe who quickly played a pin point pass across the circle to enable that predator Lyle Kane to slam the ball past the despairing goalkeeper into the net to give his team the 2-1 lead. The Antrim tails were up and they confidently played out the last few minutes to clinch the victory and leave them in a great spot going in to their last match this Saturday against CIYMS Seconds at home where a win would give them a semi final place. Team thanks to Stuart Campbell for umpiring the game in his usual fair and expert manner.
